Karolinum

Karolinum is a complex of buildings located in the Old Town. It is a national cultural monument and a symbol of the Charles University. From the 14th century there was a residence of the oldest building of the Prague University-Charles’ or the Great Hall of residence (Collegium Caroli) which was founded by Charles IV for the twelve masters of the Prague university college. A unique building belongs to the Charles University since 1383 when the son of the University founder, king Wenceslas IV, obtained for the college one of the most imposing Old Town palaces which had been built shortly before by a rich patrician, a royal mint master and a banker, Johlin Rotlev (Rotlow).

Since 1386, Carolinum served as a residence of the Prague professors who taught and lived here. Nowadays, Carolinum is a ceremonial assembly point of the Charles University and a residence of the rector, academic representatives and the offices.

How to get there

There are many options how to reach the Karolinum from the Conference Venue. Probably the easiest way is to take the tram 14 (direction Nádraží Vysočany) or tram 24 (direction Kobylisy) from the Albertov tram stop to the Václavské náměstí tram stop. Go down the Václavské náměstí to the Na Můstku street and than turn right to Rytířská street (3rd right). From this point you can see the stately building of the Stavovské divadlo at the end of the street. The Karolinum entrance is situated just behind this building from the left side. The Karolinum is about 600 m walk from the Václavské náměstí tram stop.
